Visiting Bali? short article below
is for you.
The population of Bali is now over 3 million people. They are mostly Hindu
ethnic Balinese, although the island's Muslim population is growing as Javanese
and Madurese from East Java and ethnic Sasaks from neighboring Lombok come
to work in the nation's best economy - an economy driven by tourism. Balinese
culture has developed a fear, though, of being overwhelmed by tourism. The
ethnic Balinese have preserved to a large extent a culture and religion which
sets them apart from their neighbors. But they now fear that tourism will
eroding their Hindu values and their traditions. That fear now has a symbol:
the 40-story high statue of the Garuda by sculptor I Nyoman Nuarta at the
international airport. The Garuda is a Hindu god; Indonesia's national airline
is named for the bird. The statue's backers see it as a powerful metaphor
for the economic life and growth of the island; its detractors see it as sacrilege
and a cheapening of the culture's image and values. Tourism in Bali began
in the early 1920's when the island's Dutch colonial rulers began to market
the island as a cruise destination. Within a few years a hundred visitors
a year were coming to the island. By the start of WWII it was up to 250 visitors
a year. Cruise ships stopped on the north side of Bali and visitors traveled
by car to the Bali Hotel in Denpasar. Now Bali welcomes thousands of foreign
visitors every day. Bali's attraction was tarnished briefly by the political
tension in Indonesia over the past few years. But tourists (half of whom are
Australian or Japanese) have decided that this corner of Indonesia, at least,
is safe.
